Dreamer

by Robert Treybur

I tend to have strange dreams
Disturbing is a better word, at least for me
In my dreams I can't protect myself
I can't harm other people… even when I try…

Once I dreamed about some guys from school, years ago
I didn't think they even knew who I was, but they did this time
They were punching and kicking me
I couldn't even throw a punch - I was so ashamed…

Another time I had a dream when someone wanted to beat me really badly
Someone I thought was a friend, but not this time I guess
Relying on the black belt Dad had paid for, ready for this very moment
My every kick and punch were in slow motion — so completely useless…

Last night I dreamt that I was walking alone
Down a dark street, with fog and no light (you know the scene)
Three of them came out of the shadows all in black to rob me
The law was on my side - I knew it! - but my trigger wouldn't work…

Wikipedia says my subconscious is manifesting
Unresolved conflicts from a lifetime of disappointments
Time to grab my overcoat and range bag - don't forget the thousand-yard stare!
AND PROVE TO THE WORLD THAT I AM MORE THAN JUST A DREAMER.
