Waiting

by Charlene Ashley Taylor

The terrible waiting
for mother tooth fairy
will you remember?
I’ll toss and turn in my
bed all night
like a puppy full of worms
until my hair becomes
tangled
and filled with chewing gum,
the gum I was spanked
for leaving on my bedpost.

There is a brittle tooth waiting
under my pillow for you.
