For My Sister

by Mary Ellen Estes George

It wasn’t her imagination
The demons in the dark
The shadows of her childhood
Visions of tentacled monsters

I was hiding in the closet

She didn’t dream the silence
Of her rabid screams
Her hair standing on end
The lashes of authority

I was hiding in the corner

It wasn’t just a nightmare
Making up the boogie man
The smashing of her soul
The drowning of reality

I was hiding in my silence
afraid to save her

It was buried in my silence
