Tlacatlaolli/Pozole

by Juan Manuel Perez

(men shelled corn)

in this jungle maze
that only separates us
like husks against corn

the heat of the fight
in the slaughter of battle
coming after you

practices in place
since our ancestors decreed
we both knew the rules

like a bowl of soup
like the life of warriors
an end comes to all

upon the altar
at the last beat of your heart
that’s not where you end

I’m blessed by your strength
honored to take it in war
the Creator smiles

you there, of good flesh
you who honors ancient ones
you’ll make a great dish
