Numbers

by Stephanie Smith

There are zombies
on the subway tonight
counting numbers
into infinity
taking a fieldtrip to the heavens
soaking up eternity

They communicate in binary
salvation light years away
They count the time it takes to travel
the entire galaxy

There are zombies
in spaceships tonight
exploding stars
where babies once slept
They part the oceans with sharpened tongues
the stink of aging on their breaths

They want nothing more to do with death
and flesh is but a memory
They give up all they've ever known
to drink the elixir of immortality
