Story: Gumballs by James Tatam
No date this time, but the mother gives the boy "some notes", and it's about a carnival, so something like 1970's rural, possibly mid-western states.
Okay, half way in, we're definitely looking at Faustian themes ...
Let's see how it plays out ...

Yep. Aka "The mother only lives as long as the gum ball doesn't get eaten"! Again I have a Warehouse 13 vibe to all of this. But it's also the father's fault, blaming the child.
So it starts out fairly simple, and gets rather murky at the end!
