The Unclean River by Theo Taylor

I really like this story. While I think of myself as a "hard SF" kind of guy, I enjoyed "The Unclean River," a fantasy of swords and monsters. I was struck by a kind of gritty realism that permeated this tale of men at war, for the horrors portrayed here are universal and timeless.

It is not the enemy or the monsters across the river that make war so terrible, it is the waste and futility of war for vainglorious, incompetent leaders.
