Electric Blue Sparks Richard H. Fay

My jellied ol' mind caught on to this one a bit better. I'll assume it's classical wizardy imagery.

But my dark twist side of me thinks it could possibly double as a take on capital punishment.

I didn't think of it that way, but there is a bit of the electric chair in there.

Yes, the little scene I describe is supposed to contain classic magic-user imagery. I just wanted to add a slight twist on the idea of a sorcerer casting a spell, making it seem as if the spell backfired, or perhaps a rival cast his own spell against the hapless mage.
"I'm going to do what the warriors of old did. I'm going to recite poetry!"
