Spam cleanup...

With my newly-granted Forum SUPERPOWERS, I have cleanup up all the spam posts I could find this morning (Saturday Feb. 5) and deleted the 38(!) or so spammer userids added on February 4th and 5th(!). There may be hundreds more spammer userids in the Memberlist...

The admin functions let you see the code for 'interests' and signatures and such and favorites among the spambots include the usual (steroids, pseudoviagra, casinos, 'free' movies or software, etc.) but also oddities like muscle car restoration, tourism (yeah, nothing makes me want to visit a place like spam!) for VietNam(!?), and coupons.

My suspicion is that there are a lot of people out there whose machines have been infected with spyware, trojan horses, and spambots, and some of them have visited Aphelion and posted in the forum. So let us one and all run a security sweep, preferably with multiple tools (e.g., Norton AND Spybot and...) in case we are unwittingly hosting Evil Parasites.

Firewalls

Robert,

Thank you! Would you also remove the 7 in the game section topic "Game: Synopsis Writer" under the username "Abongenox"?

I have Norton and Spybot as well as AVG giving me 3 firewalls on my computer, so I haven't run virus scans in awhile. However, I'll do it anyway.

Now that I think about it, can virus scans be run on a server and can firewalls be placed on a server? If so, that might do it.

Abone is Agone.

That one was a pain in the South 40. One topic had at least 8 copies of the post in it...

spyware and such

I sweep my system once an hour for virus and spyware apps.

Not kidding, sometimes more often depending upon where I have to be work wise.

I have good success w/Norton 360.

Plan of Action

Einstein said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

It may just be me, but I don't think this spam nightmare is going away until it is cut off at the root.

My suggestion of running antivirus on the server, putting firewalls on the server at entry ports if possible, or move the site to another server and or back to the previous one might be a possible answer. Or maybe copy the site to a hard drive, then erase everything on the server and reload it after virus scans have been run on the hard drive copy could be a possible solution.

It's got to be tiring deleting 60 copies of virus postings that all loaded in a second.

If 60 can be loaded in a minute or so, how about one day 300 or even 3,000 making it impossible to clean up the site.

There has got to be technology to clean up bugs on servers.

Abongenox struck again...

Near as I can tell, that userid was added again, and made 67 more identical posts. Another userid made a post in almost every month's folder from 2004 to the present. There went about an hour I'll never get back...

spam

We are probably being hit by a zombie server, internal to the server we are using and co-oped many more working to fuck around with all connected.

I called Norton when that happened. It took them over 10 hours to work the situation and then a few more clean the bugger out of my hard drive. I had to let them in.

You all might want to consider that unless you have someone that can get into the system at that level. It will take time, lots of it.

Find out if anyone sells a bot that can hit specific locations and see if you can work a deal.

Bringing better technology to bear is definitely on my to-do list. It's just a matter of me finding the right amount of time.
