Useful reference tool: timeanddate.com

Look up time zones by city name, sunrise and sunset times, access calendars for any date, ... handy for Nightwatch or other world (Earth, that is) spanning stories.

"Do you know where in the world is the first place to celebrate the New Year? If you answered Kiritimati in Kiribati on the Christmas Islands, you win a gold star! Naturally everyone knows that Apia, Samoa is the last place for the celebration! As the old year ends and the new one begins, everyone's attention turns to the calendar. Timeanddate.com will give you all the information you'll ever need on time and locations as well as world time zones, customizable calendars, a meeting planner and other resources for your own time management. Bookmark this site for reference when making those long distance calls that always seem to wake friends in the middle of the night; you can plan your calls in a timely way for a much more coherent conversation! "
You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.
