I thought this was cleverly written, the way that the civil war hallucinations were more cogent than real life.  I was looking for an interesting explanation though.  Paranoid schizophrenia is no better than 'I woke up and it was just a dream'.  Some real reason for the 'hallucinations' would have been much more satisfying.

Personally, I thought that the narrator was just a man with a dismal life (physical challenges, domestic drudgery) and a vivid imagination that allowed him to "time travel". The Civil War milieu, while it carried the certainty of discomfort and the likelihood of pain and death, was at least more INTERESTING to him than his real life. Walter Mitty, the dark and depressing version.
