The Dark Places by Claire McMurray

What a treat for the holidays! This is not the usual sci-fi tale--it’s a romance with a touch of future technology.

I like how the protagonist develops gradually and smoothly. The actress adversary, trying to maintain her privacy, reveals little to anyone. The other characters—producers and crew--bring realism to the story.

The setting emphasizes the unreality of film. The narrator meets the actress at a nameless hotel in a nameless town and drives her to a nameless hospital to meet a nameless patient. He then chauffeurs her to a generic film set.

Ms. McMurray employs an extensive vocabulary and colorful imagery. Her writing flows seamlessly. The final scene is alive with dialogue and character descriptions. I look forward to reading more from this author.
