In the Year of Our Lord Have Mercy 1967 byEdward J.Santella

A great empire sends her legions forth: to defend the motherland, to protect her allies, to succor the oppressed, to destroy the evildoers, to wage war—interminable, fruitless, and ruinous— against ideas.
Her valiant heroes return: to suspicion and scorn.

Mr. Santella gives Crawford a convincing voice. The soldier’s debate with the monster sounds calm and conversational. My only suggestion would be to insert a break, after the first four paragraphs introducing the monster, to indicate the shift in point of view.

The last paragraph is exquisite. By bringing the monster to its destiny, Crawford changes his own. Whatever political opinion you hold, this story is worth reading.

Wow! I really liked this one! Pointed without being preachy, and with a surprise ending.

Good job!
I was raised by humans. What's your excuse?

I believe the others said enough but could not help adding my kudos to a job well done!
Remember: when people tell you something’s wrong or doesn’t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong. – Neil Gaiman
