There's a great anthropological tone throughout this entire tale. "Stucco houses" sounds like it's in the American South-West, though the image that came to my mind was Old Australia and the Dreaming.

It does a great job of putting our "modern education" helplessly off to the side while battles of auras go on via the Old Bones ways.

Altogether amazing! It's like hearing a foreign language for the first time and knowing every word. And who'd ever guess that "Deoxyribonucleic acid" was a magical incantation?
