Somewhat off-topic, and just FYI: there's an easy way to escape a frontal choke-hold. Put your hands together in front of your chest and drive them forcefully upward between the hands of your attacker. It will break your attacker's grip on your throat and leave you poised to strike downward against his head, ears, neck, or upper body as you choose.
Too bad it probably wouldn't have helped the victims in this story.
