Old Friends

by Christopher T. Dabrowski

Translated from Polish by Magda Woźniak

Seneria, 1494 – occupied grounds:

Hagen approached a warrior on guard. The Guard's smile brightened.

"Hagen, long time no see! To tell the truth I should be afraid of you" he said to his friend.

They fell into a bear hug. In the blink of an eye, Hagen took a dagger out.

"Of course you should," he thought, stabbing a blade in his friend’s back.

"Forgive me," he whispered through tears, supporting his twitching body.

Carefully, silently he dragged his friend’s corpse into the bushes. He will not even be able to bury him with dignity. What a time! Unfortunately, when the war is raging around, you cannot afford affection. Mission is paramount. They trained him that. However, he felt basely about it.
